I first heard Stan at the first Winnipeg Folk Festival he played.  I knew nothing about him before then. Everyone in the crowd got off on "Barrett's Privateers" because they could all yell "God-damn them all." But Stan got upstaged by the sun! It had been a miserable, rainy day, but during Stan's performance late in the afternoon the sun came out from behind the clouds, just before it set. The whole mainstage crowd turned around and cheered for the sun!
Also from that event, I have a photo of Stan blowing David Alan Eadie's bass behind John Allen Cameron, who performed an unscheduled set when someone else couldn't play.

Later, I caught his performances at festivals in Edmonton and Vancouver, not to mention solo concerts in Regina. I met him only once, after his first Regina show (he had just written "Field Behind the Plough"), and we had a conversation about folk clubs in Britain.

Between then and now I've internalized a lot of Stan's songs. I think I can play every song on "Fogarty's Cove," "Northwest Passage," and "From Fresh Water." I know most of "Between the Breaks" and some of "Turnaround" and "For the Family." "Home in Halifax" and "From Coffee House to Concert Hall" include many songs I already know, but some I haven't learned. I have all the albums that were released on vinyl, and the rest on CD or cassette. Whatever I've done as a musician has been influenced by my admiration for Stan's genius as a lyricist and composer. Besides which--he and I were born less than two months apart.

When I came to do my own album I knew I had to include one of Stan's tunes. I didn't want to cover one of the standards, although I love to sing them, so I chose "The Jeannie C" because it wasn't one of the commonly-performed ones. Also, I had worked out an arrangement of my own which my musical friends seemed to like.

The Jeannie C. (Real Audio)

My CD, "Habits Of A Lifetime" was recorded at Spiritwalker Studio here in Yellowknife by Norm Glowach, and released in January 2000. (The NWT Arts Council was generous with a grant that got the recording started.) Four covers, one trad, seven tunes/songs written by me (one of them with the co-operation of Gary Larson). Eclectic collection of styles: trad folk, blues, 60s rock, contemporary folk, jazz/swing. Since it's an indie the best way to procure one is to ask me directly. The song of Stan's which I've covered is "The Jeannie C." and yes, it is on the album.
