Younger Eyes
Me and Pa were sitting on the edge of yesterday;
Talking 'bout dreams and schemes that'll never come true.
He said, “What am I gonna do, now most of my life is through,
And I wake up in the morning, dreaming of younger eyes?
Well, I saw Sarah Rae walking down the road just the other day.
And she looked so pretty as she sat beneath the sycamore tree.”
She said, “Hi, Pa, how are you?” “Fine, Sarah, how 'bout you?”
But I kicked the dust on down the road,
Wishing I were twenty in my old Ford;
And we could go dancing 'til the sun came up,
Hugging and kissing in my pick-up truck,
But I woke up, finding I was dreaming of younger eyes.”
Chorus:
Younger eyes, younger eyes!
Don't let them catch you by surprise.
Gotta take every minute, put something in it for you.
And every time a new day dawns,
There's another chunk o' lifetime gone.
Don't let them pick your pocket,
When you're dreaming of younger eyes.
Well, how will I know which doors to choose.
Which ones will win and which ones will lose.
He said, “Every one's a winner with each step you take;
And every one's loser when you get a bad break!
But it don't matter, boy, if you don't try,
Ain't no use to sit and wonder why;
And you won't wake up in the morning
Dreaming of younger eyes.”
Chorus:
Now swapping stories and lies, and laugh 'til we cried
Are of other days.
And the truth ain't worth much more
Than a bottle of gin.
He said, “You can live life up on the shelf,
Or get down, boy, and help yourself;
And you won't wake up in the morning
Dreaming of younger eyes.”
Chorus:
