Well, I've traveled and wandered all over this land;
The dreams of a gypsy in the palm of my hand;
Living a life I was born for, in truth;
Unfettered by wisdom and fueled by youth.
Well, the nighttime would tumble and roll with the game.
The faces were formless with passionate flame.
When the sunrise arrived, well, I knew what to do,
'Til I came to this green town and here I met you.
Chorus:
And I don't really understand the wherefores and whys;
Don't really care for this living a lie.
Ah, when I saw your face, it shone right in my eyes;
And I said then and there, no more living these lies.
Well, I turned from your doorstep as was my intent;
Your smile belied by the tears that you wept.
But somehow, horizons had no more to tell,
And I turned from the distance - into your arms I fell.
Chorus:
Now, for thirty long years you have lain by my side.
The children have flown; like the young birds they fly.
But, in the darkness, the gypsy comes stealing to me,
And whispers the lies that pretend I am free.
So, I wait for the morning, to say my good-byes;
But with every new sunrise I look in your eyes
And bless this ole' green town that brought me to you,
And thank every daybreak that keeps my love true.
Chorus:
