Paul grew up during the rise of folk music into popular culture back in
the 1960's, and in time established himself as one of the finest pickers
on the southern Ontario circuit, taking the stage with other musicians we
would come to know, including Willie P. Bennett, David Essig, Doug
MacArthur, and Stan Rogers. He later turned to producing, working
for the CBC for 24 years. Ever wonder how Paul got the nickname
'Curly Boy Stubbs'? Well, Jennifer Claveau's interview on
Paul's web site
shed's the light for folk music fans:
"...it was in 1974, when CBC obtained the broadcast rights for the
Winnipeg Folk Festival, that Paul met festival artistic director Mitch
Podolak. By this time, Paul's reputation for knowing how to handle a
guitar had preceded him and Mitch tried to book him for a guitar workshop.
But Paul was reluctant to mix official CBC business with his own musical
aspirations and politely declined the invitation. It was a week later when
Podolak called to inform him that he had been booked to perform with
slide-blues player John Hammond Jr. under the stage name "Curly Boy
Stubbs". Paul laughs, "ever since then, the name just stuck, and I blame
Mitch."
