My brother, a booking agent at the time (1980s), received some Stan Rogers L.P.s from a Canadian fan. As is often the case with agents, he probably listened when he was in unreceptive mode. Whatever the reason, he didn't take to Stan's albums immediately. I, however, did and learned a couple of his songs.

I was just starting to write myself and listening to Stan's melodies and lyrics was a great inspiration. There was a freedom in his writing which I admired.

That coupled with sound advice from Rab Noakes that if you want to write songs you should "just do it" got me started.

When the bad news came I found myself automatically writing a tribute. I'm not usually the kind of nut that claims divine intervention but for some strange reason I felt I was writing it with John Lennon holding the pen. (I was also a huge Beatles fan.) I get the feeling I'll regret admitting that.

The grapevine informed us that Stan's plane caught fire due to somebody smoking in its toilet. My song was written and recorded before any idea of researching the facts came to me.

So here was "Stan the Singer" in my first batch of self-penned songs. Being a shy type, many would disagree, it took guts to have my guitar virtuoso friend, Sandy Stanage, listen to these songs. It was this song that he picked up on first. He suggested the fast jangly pick and the idea to vocalise the 'turn around' which had been only guitar until that point.

This song has always gone down well in my set and I still do it now and again. I think most of Stan's admirers would expect a slower tempo to such a lyric but I maintain it's a celebration of his life rather than a dirge to his demise. Perhaps if I'd known him personally I'd have written it differently but whatever its speed, the lyrical content is intended to be nothing but sympathetic, complimentary and to let folks know that his music is still out there and that they should go get it.

Although the name Stan Rogers is far better known than mine ever will be, a few have thanked me for their introduction to his music via this song, which I hope folks enjoy and receive in the spirit it was penned.
